Birthday month, August evenings and a Haiku

August 16, 2022

Happy Birthday Lydia & Matilda!

Lydia has been teamed up with us for six years. Wow! Ever since she came, she’s given us a sense of fashion and class. Though anyone that looks closely will she she’s an eagle hanging with a bunch of turkeys.

It’s been a year since Tilly has entered our lives, and they haven’t been the same. She’s a mindful daughter, a devoted sister, and just a nut. A kooky nut which no one can take their eyes off.

August evenings.

Every year, at no set day, no set time, I catch a whiff of the air and it all comes back so clearly. Minnesota Sunday nights in August. Not just the picture, but the smells, the air. :10:30pm. Dad in his bathrobe, the backdoor open, the dew already piled upon the freshly cut grass, and the damp damp heavy air. The fan trying its darndest to keep air moving and make living bearable. The television is on channel 4, KXJB, and the Hole-in-One Contest with Jim Adelson is on until 10:45 when Gunsmoke will grace the air waves. That’s it. Nothing else. A memory that is so bereft of anything meaningful in my life other than I love to go back there for just one evening.

Wanderlust

Recently a friend referenced this word in regards to me. It struck me as that was the exact word my uncle had uttered to me many a moons ago. And they are both 100% correct. I have it. Maybe “had” it, for many years. I had to be going somewhere to feel like I was progressing. Though, to be honest, I never really understood what it is, where it came from, etc. and I innocently asked those questions to the source that mentioned it. He replied, “It just is.”

That really made me go back into the recesses of my mind, to find what incident in my past infected with the apparent power of this word. My parents didn’t have it. My siblings don’t have it. They all love staying put. Friends? Nah. Books? I grew up in the 70s. I watched Three’s Company. I doubt that caused this supposed change in my DNA. Maybe it just is.
